MONEY BASICS

Why central-bank interest rates matter

Central banks use policy interest rates to influence borrowing costs and economic demand. When rates rise, loans and credit may become more expensive, which can cool spending. Savings products may offer higher yields, though banks do not always pass rate changes through equally.

Rate changes can also affect currencies, bond prices, and investor expectations. The effect is not automatic: markets often move based on what they expected before the announcement.

COST OF LIVING

Inflation: why the same money buys less

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general level of prices. If a basket of goods costs more this year than last year, the purchasing power of each unit of money has fallen. Individual prices can still rise or fall differently from the overall inflation rate.

To understand an inflation report, check the period measured, whether the figure is monthly or annual, and which categories contributed most. A lower inflation rate means prices are rising more slowly; it does not necessarily mean prices have fallen.

CURRENCY

What makes exchange rates move?

Exchange rates can respond to interest-rate expectations, inflation, trade flows, political risk, and demand for a currency. A quoted rate may also differ by provider because of fees, spreads, and whether it is a buying or selling rate.

Before comparing rates, make sure both quotes use the same currency pair, date, and transaction type. A headline reference rate may not be the rate available to an individual customer.
